Government-backed finance
Dedicated British Business Bank capital for smaller businesses in Wales. What it offers, how it is delivered, and how to work out if it fits your deal.
The Investment Fund for Wales is a £130m investment fund from the British Business Bank, created to increase the supply of finance to smaller businesses in Wales. Like all the Nations and Regions Investment Funds it is commercially focused, meaning it lends and invests expecting a return rather than making grants, and it is delivered locally through appointed fund managers rather than by the British Business Bank itself.
The funds typically offer three tiers: smaller loans of around £25,000 to £100,000, debt finance from around £100,000 up to £2m, and equity investment for businesses with strong growth potential, with each tier handled by fund managers appointed for the region and product. Criteria, process and timescales are set by those fund managers, and eligibility broadly follows where the business is based and trades.
The Investment Fund for Wales (Cronfa Buddsoddi i Gymru) backs smaller businesses across the whole of Wales, from Cardiff and Newport to the valleys, mid Wales and the north coast, and operates bilingually alongside the Development Bank of Wales in the Welsh funding landscape.
Our role is honest triage and proper packaging. We help you establish whether this fund is genuinely the right home for your funding need, or whether a specialist commercial lender, a Growth Guarantee Scheme facility through an accredited lender, or secured lending would be faster, larger or a better structural fit. Where the fund route wins, the application needs the same quality of preparation any lender expects, accounts, forecasts and a clearly told story, and that preparation is our daily work. Where the commercial route wins, we arrange it. Either way you decide with both options priced in front of you.

Frequently asked questions
No. It is a commercial fund: loans are repaid with interest and equity investment buys a stake in your business. Its distinctiveness is dedicated regional capital and locally appointed fund managers, not free money.
Through the fund managers appointed for the region and the loan size you need, each of whom runs their own application process and criteria. Preparation quality matters as much here as with any lender, and it is where most applications are won or lost.
It depends on speed, size, structure and what the money is for. The fund can be a strong home for regional growth stories; commercial and specialist lenders are often faster, can go larger and suit property-backed or deadline-driven deals better. We price both routes so you choose with full information.
Nothing. A short call is usually enough to establish whether the fund is a realistic route for your deal, what the alternatives look like, and what preparing a strong application would involve. If we then arrange finance for you, our fees and any commission are always disclosed and agreed in writing first.
